The Five Takeaways: Flames vs. Stars

SLUMPBUSTERS

After a tough eight game drought, Flames forward Olli Jokinen scored a goal at 6:53 in the first period to tie the game. Olli’s goal fired up the Flames and was what helped lead them to a The 33 year-old had not scored since March 11 in Minnesota. Jokinen has scored 22 goals this season and has 37 assists.

Blake Comeau also broke a 16 game scoring slump by scoring at 9:16 in the second period. Comeau scored an unassisted goal after a skillful takeaway from Ribero. Comeau has scored 5 goals with 9 assists on the season.

Alex Tanguay broke his goal deficit of five games by scoring at 19:32 in the second period. Tanguay scored a goal off an assist from Cammelleri and Giordano. Tanguay has scored 13 goals with 36 assists for the season.

STELLAR SPECIAL TEAMS

Calgary special teams were on point tonight and helped to make the difference in the game. In the first period the Flames managed to fight off two penalties and keep the Stars to only two shots on the powerplay. This kept the Stars to one for four on the power play.

The Flames put their powerplay struggles behind them by scoring three powerplay goals.  Olli Jokinen, Mark Giordano and Alex Tanguay all took advantage of a short-handed situation to score tonight.

DANGEROUS BENN

Jamie Benn has been dangerous for the Flames after scoring four goals in the back to back series.

Tonight Benn scored the first two goals for the Stars. The first goal coming early in the first period and the second came early in the second period and seemed to kickstart the Flames. After the second goal the Flames got a hold on Benn and prevented him from putting up any more numbers.

BABCHUK ON A ROLL

Flames defenceman Anton Babchuk has had some of his strongest games of the season. Getting a point in his last four games with two goals and two assists Babchuk has become a strong contributor to the Flames.

“His overall game has been good, Babs is feeling confident and he’s confortable back there not” said head coach Brent Sutter. “He’s made some really good plays defensively and he’s been really good at finishing his checks, he’s played well the last little bit.”

This is the 27 year-old’s second season with the Flames and has proved an asset on defence by stepping in when the team was struggling with injuries.

FINISHING

The Flames have had trouble scoring despite out shooting opponents. This difficulty in finishing has kept them to only six goals in four games. Tonight the Flames managed to put the puck in the net five times to win the game.

The line of Stempniak, Comeau and Stajan were one of the big standouts of the night.

“I think they played well for us tonight,” said head coach Brent Sutter. “Tonight they were solid, I changed it up a bit and had Stajan go against Benn a bit more in the last two periods and I think they did a great job against him.”
