Connelly excited to join the Flames organization

CALGARY, AB -- Truth be told, Brian Connelly wasn't all that surprised when he was informed he had been traded to Calgary Flames.

"I kind of had in the back of my mind that it could happen," he admitted. "Obviously with any player, you can be traded at any time."

The blueliner was part of a swap between the Flames and the Chicago Blackhawks that saw veteran forward Brendan Morrison head to the Windy City. After being told about the deal, Connelly reveled in that fact he was headed to a Canadian franchise.

"I'm excited," he told CalgaryFlames.com. "Obviously going to Canada, a big hockey city. It's a great team and I'm just looking forward to being part of a great organization like the Flames.

"I was excited to hear that the Flames were the team I ended up with."

The 25 year-old was in the midst of this third full season with the Rockford and has been an offensive force for the IceHogs since joining the club. In 2010-11 season, he sat second overall in team scoring with 52 points (11 goals, 41 assists) and he has potted five goals and 36 points in 44 games this year.

"I think I'm a puck moving defenceman," Connelly said. "I try to be that second layer of offence."

His offensive flair doesn't mean he shirks away from his defensive duties. His speed and on-ice vision have contributed greatly to his solid play in his own end.

"I think I can do well in my own zone. I'm a smaller defenceman. I don't exactly knock guys around but I try to use my smarts and have a good stick in the defensive zone to help me out with bigger players I play against."

Connelly doesn't have any NHL experience thus far in his career and he will likely be headed to the Abbotsford Heat but it doesn't matter to Connelly where he ends up for now.

"I'm just happy I'm with Calgary."
