Cammalleri can\'t wait to get back to Calgary

CALGARY, AB -- When Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster phoned Mike Cammalleri to tell him he had been acquired by the club, the forward wasted no time in asking some very important questions.

"The first thing out of his mouth was, he said, 'What are we, four points back?' He said 'Saturday night, it's the Kings right? Hockey Night In Canada?'"

That kind of unbridled enthusiasm and exuberance were echoed by the man himself during his conversation with CalgaryFlames.com.

"I am extremely excited, I was told I was traded and I wasn't sure where. I hoped it was Calgary.

"It's a place that I have such fond memories, I really have strong relationships with some of the players. I really appreciated playing there."

The trade has been percolating for weeks and blossomed last night when Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier called Feaster and asked if he was still interested in obtaining Cammalleri's services. Given Bourque's suspension, the call caught Feaster slightly by surprise.

"When Borkie was suspended this most recent time, I thought there was no sense in trying to advance it any further while he was on the suspended list.

"We started working on it again last night and into today and ultimately we got it done late this afternoon and then had the conference call tonight."

Days ago, Cammalleri expressed his frustration with the Canadiens performance this season as well as his own play and it created quite a stir with both the media and fans.

Feaster noted it was just a coincidence that the trade came right after the comments made by Cammalleri and that those remarks didn't make him waiver when it came to making the choice to acquire him.

"I have to tell you, for me to hear the passion and the emotion and the enthusiasm that he had when I called him just a short while ago ... if that's the corollary to it, that every once and awhile he's going to pop off and stir the pot and maybe get some people with their nose out of joint - I'll take that.

"I want that passion. I want that emotion. I think that's something we need in our locker room. I think it's something we need on the bench. We need somebody who is emotional and passionate."

The Flames were in the middle of their game against the Anaheim Ducks when the trade was announced. An announcement was made in-game and the crowd absolutely roared when they heard Cammalleri's name.

After being told about the reaction, Cammalleri paused before responding.

"Wow, that's amazing," he said. "That's really flattering."

During his first stint with the Flames in the 2008-09 campaign, the winger donned number 13 but Olli Jokinen is now sporting that number.

"I know Olli took the only number I've ever worn so I'll have to take something else. I've asked them to email me a list of numbers so I'll pick one from that."
