Morning Skate Report: Flames vs. Capitals

COMEAU TO CENTER ICE

After Sunday's loss to the Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames head coach Brent Sutter lamented his team was too soft up the middle and chided his pivots for their lack of physicality in the defensive zone.

He has made some line alterations in order to remedy that, placing the gritty Blake Comeau between Rene Bourque and Lee Stempniak.

"It'll be a big challenge for me but I'm definitely up for it," Comeau stated. "I take a lot of pride in playing a two-way game."

Comeau played center on a few occasions during his tenure with the WHL's Kelowna Rockets so he doesn't believe he'll feel totally out of place when the puck drops tonight.

He also played the position during the third period in Nashville and thought it went well.

"We had a little chemistry, with Stempniak and Bourque, so hopefully we can carry that over."

TAKING ON THE HIGH FLYING CAPS

The Washington Capitals have been spectacular on home ice as of late, going 5-1-0 in their last six outings at the Verizon Center.

They are also coming off a 4-2 victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets in which captain Alex Ovechkin scored two goals.

"When you watch them play and go through tapes, they play hard. They're working hard," Sutter said. "You see structure in their game. They've got top-end talent so you've got to recognize that and know who you're playing against."

Flames captain Jarome Iginla noted how the team's physical play picked up in the third period in Nashville and they were able to pull the game within a single goal. He feels that the team needs to carry that gritty play into tonight's battle.

"When we're going better, we do that a little bit more," he acknowledged. "We're a little bit more desperate. A little more hungry around the net."

QUOTABLE

"We have to be able to find ways to play with the lead right now because we are getting that lead, which is what you want. But we've got to be able to play that same way, with that same attitude, that 'Keep pushing for it,' and 'Keep pushing after it.'" - Iginla
