CZECH REPUBLIC 7 DENMARK 0 (6:00pm MST @ Rexall Place)
The Czech Republic came out firing on all cylinders against Denmark on Tuesday evening on their way to a 7-0 victory.
With 44 shots on goal, the Czechs nearly quadrupled Denmark’s 12 shots on goaltender Petr Mrazek, who recorded the shut out.
Tomas Hertl broke the ice for the Czech Republic, scoring the first two goals of the contest. A trio of assists was recorded by Ottawa Senators’ prospect and QMJHL product, Jakub Kulek who is participating in his second U20 World Junior Championship.
Half of the goals were scored on the power play, with the final tally coming short-handed. The loss moves Denmark to 0-2 in the tournament.
SLOVAKIA 3 LATVIA 1 (8:00 pm MST @ Scotiabank Saddledome)
Slovakia continued their dominance over Latvia with a 3-1 victory in round robin play on day 2 of the World Junior Hockey Championships on Tuesday. Despite a great effort from goaltender, Kristers Gudlevskis Latvia recorded their second straight loss in the tournament.
Neither team scored in the first period which was a tight checking affair. Latvia opened the scoring in the second period with a marker from Juris Ziemens. Slovakia then rallied to score three straight goals including a pair of goals 5 minutes apart in the final frame.
Team Canada will be the next opponent in the preliminary round for the Czech Republic on Wednesday. Game time is 6:00 pm MST in Edmonton.
