CALGARY, AB -- A wild, high-scoring third period nearly sunk the Calgary Flames lead over the Carolina Hurricanes but the home team escaped with a 7-6 victory.

Six goals were scored in the third period, including two from the Hurricanes in the last minute of the third period.

The game saw the return of Brendan Morrison. Prior to Tuesday's clash with Carolina, the veteran had been relegated to the press box for the last five games as a healthy scratch.

Morrison potted two goals and had two assists in the victory. Coming into the game, he had just one goal to his name.

The Flames were firing on all cylinders to start the game, rifling 10 shots at Cam Ward in the first 3:07 of the game, with captain Jarome Iginla beating him in that flurry to earn his eighth of the season.

Winger Lee Stempniak scored the second goal of the evening at 18:51 of the first period. Jay Bouwmeester put the puck net from the goal line and Stempniak was able to whip it past forward during the ensuing scramble.

Just 42 seconds into the middle frame, Morrison netted the Flames third tally of night when he picked off an errant puck from a Jokinen rush.

Jiri Tlusty was awarded a penalty shot at  of the second period after TJ Brodie took him out on a breakaway. The centerman deked around Kiprusoff and went top shelf to cut the Flames lead to two goals.

It looked like Carolina was taking over the momentum when Hurricanes forward Tim Brent made it a 3-2 game at 13:16 of the second period but Rene Bourque answered back with a goal of his own.

Stealing the puck away from defenceman Derek Joslin at the Flames blueline, the winger went flying into the zone, leaving Tim Gleason all alone to defend against Bourque and Tanguay. Opting to shoot rather than pass, Bourque shuttled the puck five-hole on Ward.

Morrison's second of the night came at 1:22 of the final frame when his pass, intended for Jokinen, was deflected by Hurricanes defenceman Jamie McBain, off the post, off of Ward and into the net.

Then, Carolina's Tuomo Ruutu notched his eighth of the season but Mikael Backlund responded at 10:57, giving the Flames their first power play goal since Oct. 26, keeping the Flames ahead by three.

Eric Staal kept the back-and-forth pace going when threw in the Hurricanes fourth of the night at 13:42. Iginla added an empty netter at 18:51, which ended up being the game-winner, and it looked like the Flames had the game in the bag. However, Chad LaRose and Staal rallied for their club in the last minute, pushing the score to 7-6.
