CALGARY, AB -- After practice on Thursday morning, Calgary Flames head coach confirmed that defenceman Mark Giordano has been named as an assistant captain for the club.

"He's a very well-respected guy inside of our dressing room and rightly so. He's got everything in the right place and he handles everything very well. He'll do a real good job with it."

After former assistant captain Robyn Regehr was traded to Buffalo in the off-season, many suspected Giordano would fill that vacancy.

"You don't have to have a letter on your jersey to be a leader and that's why Gio has never had it on his jersey up to now," Sutter said. "He's always led."

Giordano's fellow defenceman Cory Sarich noted that the role can put pressure on players. Suddenly, they're in the spotlight - both internally and externally - and when a team struggles, their leaders are the first looked to when the ship needs to be righted.

That kind of pressure may cause a player to change his disposition and leadership tactics but Sarich isn't worried about Giordano's ability to guide the team in the direction they want to be headed, citing the blueliner's strong character.

"You don't want it to change you. You don't want to become someone you're not. That wouldn't happen with Gio."

The 28 year-old is entering his fifth season with the Flames. Over his 277 games played with the club, he has 28 goals, 108 points and  +20 rating.
