2011 Young Stars: Canucks 4, Flames 3 (OT)
PENTICTON, BC -- The Calgary Flames thought they had their first victory at the 2011 Young Stars tournament in the bag but a late third period goal and a quick overtime marker from the Vancouver Canucks sunk their hopes as they fell 4-3.

Patrick Holland had two goals in the loss while Maxwell Reinhart chipped in with two assists. Joni Ortio, who allowed six goals on 26 shots on Sunday, came up with 36 saves. The Finn looked more comfortable than he did in the loss to the Sharks and made a few clutch saves throughout the game.

"The game was pretty different from last night," said Ortio. "Much more shots right from the get-go and those kind of situations are always easier to get into at the beginning."

Holland was placed on the top line with Reinhart and Sven Baertschi. The trio were excellent and had instant chemistry, posing a threat every time they stepped on the ice.

"I'm pretty honoured to play with those guys," Holland said of his linemates. "They're obviously great players and I felt really comfortable with them. They seemed to go to the right spots whenever I grabbed the puck so it makes it really easy for me."

The Canucks struck first at when Kellan Tochkin was beat Joni Ortio at 2:24. Defenceman Craig Duiniwick sent a shot from the point on net and while Ortio was able to make the initial save, he sent the rebound right towards a waiting Tochkin. The winger knew the Flames netminder was out of position and wasted no time in letting a shot go.

With Ian Saab in the penalty box for cross checking, the Flames power play went to work trying to crack St. Laurent. After Reinhart got the puck on net and the netminder couldn't get a glove on it, Holland and Baertschi swooped in trying to whack in the rebound. After several attempts, Holland buried and evened up the contest.

Vancouver gave themselves a lead early in the second period with a power play goal. Yann Sauve sent a sharp-angled on net and Nathan Longprie was in the perfect position to wire the rebound over Ortio's shoulder at 3:54.

Once again, it was Holland who tied the game for the Flames. It was extremely similar to Calgary's first goal of the night with both Holland and Reinhart crashing the net in hopes of knocking in a rebound from close range. Reinhart earned the lone helper on the goal for his second point of the evening.

Just past the midway mark of the third stanza, Tochkin got free at the blueline and went in on a breakaway. Ortio stuck with the forward all the way and made a terrific glove save to keep the game deadlocked at two.

Michael Ferland broke the tie with just 3:40 left in regulation after Dustin Sylveester sent him a great pass. St. Laurent couldn't get over in time to stop the wrist shot Ferland sent at him, earning his first point in the game.

It looked like the Flames had the game wrapped up but Longprie managed to score his second goal of the afternoon with just 15.3 seconds left in regulation.

Roussel ended the game just 14 seconds into overtime with a shot Ortio didn't even see, handing the Flames their second loss of the tournament.

"The guy was coming in and tried to shoot and he lost the puck," explained Ortio. "It went back door and the other guy banked one in so I'm just not really sure what happened."

The Flames have Tuesday off, playing their final game of the Young Stars tournament on Wednesday night at 8:30 PM MST.
