Flames sign Scott Hannan
CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today the signing of defenceman Scott Hannan.

"Throughout the summer we have consistently said that we were not yet finished adding to our hockey club, and while we have great confidence that one of our second-year prospects or quality depth defencemen we added this off-season will step-up and make our hockey team in training camp, we have also recognized the need for some veteran leadership at that position," said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. "Scott not only brings a wealth of experience to our blue line, but he also brings a great deal of knowledge about the Western Conference in general and our Division in particular. Just as importantly, he has demonstrated his commitment to our organization and his desire to be a part of our team by agreeing to a contract that enables us to fit him under the salary cap. We are very pleased to add him to the Flames family, and we look forward to his contributions to our success both on and off the ice."

Hannan, a native of Richmond, BC, split last season between the Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals. The gritty, shutdown defenceman has played in 830 NHL career games accumulating 185 points and 430 penalty minutes. He has also played 82 career playoff games. Hannan was originally selected in the first round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, 23rd overall, by the San Jose Sharks. He earned NHL All-Star status for the Western Conference in the 2003–2004 season. The 6’2, 220lb rearguard was a member of Team Canada who captured the World Cup in 2004.
