However, it was hardly a slow day at the office for general manager Jay Feaster.
"It has been a busy day," Feaster admitted. "We've had a lot of things going and a lot of things still going."
With several high profile free agents still on the market - Brad Richards being the headliner in that group - rumours have swirled as to which players the Flames are interested in.
While Feaster could say the team has contacted several players, he couldn't release the names of those involved.
"I wish I could talk to you about the things that we've been working, and are working on, but I don't think that's in our strategic best interest to do that.
"I cannot confirm or deny and nothing should be inferred by my inability to confirm or deny."
The next few days will be crucial for all teams involved in the hunt top tier players and Feaster excepts his weekend to spent on the phone.
"We're looking at a lot of different things," he said on Friday night. "We have a lot of different things we want to accomplish. Certainly one of them is to add to our depth organizationally. There are a lot of different moving pieces and components to it."
Other than trying to sign free agents, Feaster believes the team can address their needs via the trade route.
"I still think there are going to be deals done. We saw today in fact. I think there were a couple of trades and I think we're going to continue to see that.
"You have a lot of teams that are going to have invest significant dollars just to get to the salary cap floor so with a limited supply of free agents on the market, you can see how things get heated pretty quickly."
On the front of Flames UFA's, defencemen Anton Babchuk and Adam Pardy had been sent offers before July 1st but neither could come to terms with the club. Pardy signed a two-year deal in Dallas worth $2 million per season while Babchuk is still available.
"Where Anton was as far as what he was looking for was a little bit more than where we were prepared to go so he did hit the market today.
"We'll certainly stay in touch because he is a guy we like but we were not able at least initially prior to today to be able to get something done."
