Weisbrod named assistant general manager\/player personnel

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today the hiring of John Weisbrod as Assistant General Manager/Player Personnel to Flames General Manager Jay Feaster.

"We are pleased to be able to add someone with John’s experience to our staff,” said Feaster. “Not only does he come with an extensive background in various disciplines of hockey, John has won championships as General Manager in both the AHL and IHL and most recently in his current position, leading the pro and collegiate scouting staff of the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins. John has the current experience and knowledge that I need from the person in this position."

Weisbrod, a native of Syosset, NY, joins the Flames after winning the Stanley Cup as the Director of Pro and Collegiate Scouting for the Boston Bruins where he has been since joining the organization in September of 2006. Prior to that, John spent the 2005-06 season as a pro scout for the Dallas Stars out of the New England region.

The Harvard graduate became the General Manager/Director of Operations for the Albany River Rats (affiliate of the New Jersey Devils) in 1993 and won the Calder Cup as AHL Champions in 1995. Additionally, he served as the General Manager of the Orlando Solar Bears winning the Turner Cup as IHL Champions in 2001. When the IHL disbanded, the Solar Bears owner promoted him into the Magic organization in an administrative position. However, he was soon promoted to General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the NBA’s Orlando Magic for 2004-2005 season before returning to hockey in May of 2005.

Weisbrod attended and played center on the Harvard ice hockey team from 1987 to 1991, capturing a NCAA National Championship in 1989 while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He won three New York State Championships in 1978, 1980 and 1982. Weisbrod was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars 4th round (73rd overall) in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Because of injury, Weisbrod took the year off hockey in 1991–1992, only to play 16 games with the Kansas City Blades of the IHL before being forced to retire due to injury.
