Injury Update: Brendan Morrison

CALGARY, AB -- After being sidelined on Mar. 2 with a knee injury, veteran forward Brendan Morrison stated it would be, at the very least, a few weeks before the malady could even be evaluated thanks to severe swelling of the joint.

That estimation appears to be a little off and that's definitely positive news for the Flames. Morrison has begun skating on his own this week.

"It's making an improvement, which is good," Morrison said on Monday afternoon. "It's nice to be out on the ice but we've still got a ways to go.

"There's still some swelling that is lingering but it does feel pretty good on the ice. I've skated a couple times this week and I guess that's a good sign."

While the progression to on-ice training has added a shred of optimism when it comes to the Flames injury woes, Morrison isn't sure if he'll be able to return to action during the regular season.

"There's still no timetable. I wish I could but we can't. We're working on a range of motions still, things like that.

"We have a pretty good idea of what it is but it's tough to really do anything until swelling goes out. We've been working hard in there, keeping everything strong, with the hope that there is a chance. We're going to continue to do that."

This isn't the first time Morrison has dealt with a serious injury and while he has learned patience is the key when it comes to dealing with the time away from the game, he admitted he was struggling with the inability to help his club during this incredibly important time of year.

"It's tough. It's a lot tougher watching than actually playing the games. There's definitely a feeling of helplessness and you just feel so distant from everything. You understand what the team is going through because you've been in situations like this before and it's tough. You're doing everything you can to pull for these guys."
