Flames, Hitmen raise $68,000 for Movember

The Calgary Flames, Calgary Hitmen, Flames Foundation for Life and Movember are proud to conclude the month of November with a fundraising total of over $68,000 in benefit of Prostate Cancer Canada.

Throughout the month of November Flames and Hitmen players grew moustaches to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer Canada. Through the Calgary Flames and Movember websites Flames players raised over $22,000 with fans, players and individuals’ donating to each player’s moustache, $10,000 of this amount was donated by Flames defenceman Cory Sarich, who spearheaded the team initiative. The Flames charitable arm the Flames Foundation for Life matched both the Flames total of $22,000 and the Hitmen total of $12,000 for a sum donation of $34,000 to Prostate Cancer Canada making $68,000 the final donation for Movember.

“I was thrilled to see how many people were involved in the Movember campaign. A big thank you to my teammates, Calgarians and fans who got involved - just walking the streets of Calgary it was admirable the number of men of all ages sporting their own version of the handlebar awareness campaign,” said Flames Defenceman Cory Sarich. “We had a lot of fun with the campaign and I’m honoured we could do it for a great cause in Prostate Cancer Canada.”

During his lifetime, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with the disease, and this number is expected to rise to 1 in 4 within a decade. Prostate cancer is over 90 per cent curable if detected and treated in its earliest stages. In addition to investing in research, Movember raises awareness and ultimately saves lives.  Funds raised will support the development of programs related to prostate cancer awareness, education, and research into the prevention, early detection, treatment and possible cure of prostate cancer.
