The Game Rush: Flames vs. Wild

CALGARY, AB -- After a lengthy road trip, the Calgary Flames returned home to square off against the Minnesota Wild in an important divisional matchup. If they were suffering from jet lag, they showed no signs of it.

The Flames started their two-game homestand with a 3-0 victory over the Wild, pushing them to 22 points on the season.

Calgary kicked off the second period with a flurry of shots and goals. First, Jay Bouwmeester picked up his third of the season after a terrific spinning pass from Jarome Iginla.

Then, just 18 seconds later, Iginla gave the Flames a two goal cushion when he was able to pick a rebound after a scramble in front of Jose Theodore.

The Wild picked up their game in the the third period but Miikka Kiprusoff came up big for his club, stopping 32 shots through 60:00.

Niklas Hagman added a late power play tally at 18:31.

After the Flames had opened the scoring early in the second period, the Wild got themselves settled down and went to work at evening up the contest.

Defenceman Marek Zidlicky hopped into the play and was able to successfully evade the Flames defence to get a clear shot on net from close range. Zidlicky deked to his right, hoping Kiprusoff would stay put for a shot in the slot but the netminder followed him all the way through to make the clutch pad save. The Wild had momentum in their favour at the time of the save and by keeping them off the scoresheet, Kiprusoff seemed to deflate their energy.

Last season, Bouwmeester managed just three goals over 82 games. On Monday, he matched that total in spectacular fashion.

After throwing seven shots on net in the first five minutes of the second stanza, the Flames were able to beat Theodore and open the scoring in the tilt. Iginla drove the puck around the Wild net, spinning quickly at the side and dishing the puck to Bouwmeester, who had hopped into the play. The smooth skating blueliner wasted no time in throwing the puck over Theodore, who couldn't get over in time to make the save.

After a very pedestrian first period, Flames captain amped up his game for the middle stanza. He generated chances every time he was on the ice, played a key role in the Flames opening tally and scored the game's second goal.

In 19:00 of ice time, Iginla had seven shots, three hits and a +2 rating.

The Flames were able to put a losing skid against the Wild at home to an end of Monday. Prior to the Flames victory, the Wild had won the last three games played at the Scotiabank Saddledome after losing 14 of the past 15. Two of the last three Wild victories came in extra time, one in a shootout and one in overtime.

"He's been pretty lights out lately. We've lost some games but he's kept us in there. It's the same old story with him. We know what we have with Kipper. It's nice when you have those nights where you'e not there and he can make those saves. Night's like tonight, it's good to get that shutout for him, reward him for that." - Bouwmeester on the play of his goaltender
