Mark Giordano opened the scoring for the Flames on a 5-on4 power play opportunity at 15:58 of the opening frame.  Jarome Iginla set Giordano up with a nice one-timer that flew past Jimmy Howard.

40-year old Red Wing centre, Mike Modano, tied things up for the Wings as he raced into the Flames zone and fired his well-known wrist shot over the glove of Kiprusoff from the middle of the left circle. Modano's second goal of the season came just 1:54 into the second frame.

Justin Abdelkader picked up the Wings go-ahead goal at the 12:05 mark of the second period. With a nice feed from Pavel Datsyuk just over the blueline, Abdelkader threw a wrist shot just over Kiprusoff's glove side for the 2-1 lead.

The Wings kept coming at the Flames into the third period as they tripled the Flames 12-4 on the shot clock. 33-17 was the shot tally in favour of the Wings after 60 minutes of play.

The Flames give up their fourth straight lead as they drop a 2-1 decision to the Detroit Red Wings.

At 1:54 of the second period, Mike Modano took a nice feed from Danny Cleary and raced across the blueline. The 40-year old fired his famous wrist shot over the glove of Miikka Kiprusoff. 

Modano's second goal of the season tied the game at one and handed the momentum to the Red Wings. The Wings kept control of the game from this point forward.

The Flames were first to hit the scoreboard and it came on the power play at 15:58 of the 1st period.

With Johan Franzen and Nicklas Lidstrom in the penalty box as well as Craig Conroy for the Flames,  Alex Tanguy, Jarome Iginla and Mark Giordano capitalized on the man advantage.

Tanguay started the play getting the puck to Iginla down low. Iginla threw the puck to the top of the circle to an open Giordano.

Giordano scored on a nice one-timer to get his first goal of the season and the first and lone Flames goal of the night.

Miika Kiprusoff held the Flames in this game as best as he could. Kiprusoff stopped 12 shots in the first period, another 12 in the third period and a total of 31 of 33 total for a .939 save %.

He was exceptional midway through the final period as he robbed Danny Cleary from giving the Wings a 3-1 lead with a nice slide across save. Kiprusoff was the second star of the game.

Since the start of the 1996-97 season, the Detroit Red Wings have won more games (693) thatn any other team in the NHL.

Detroit's 594 regular season victories and 99 playoff wins are both tops in the NHL over the past 14 seasons.

"Tonight we got stretched out at times and when you do get stretched out you give their skilled players to skate with the puck and make good plays. Tonight that's what happened. We didn't stick to our system as good as we should have and when you don't do that against a team like that, you won't be successful."- Alex Tanguay on the 2-1 loss to the Wings.

"That last four minute power play we should have put one in and that would have changed it and sent it into overtime."- Mark Giordano on the loss.



Thursday, Nov. 5th vs Minnesota

 The Flames will hit the road to Minnesota to face-off against the division rival Minnesota Wild. They will return to Calgary right after the game before turning around and heading to Denver to play the Avalanche on Nov.9th.

The 5-4-2 Wild are coming off of a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night and will have two days rest before the Flames come to town.

Flames at Wild can be seen on Sportsnet West (HD) and is on The Fan 960 radio. Puck will drop at 6:00 pm MT.
