Three Flames to World Championships
The hockey season is not over for at least three Calgary Flames.
Mark Giordano will play for Team Canada

David Moss, Eric Nystrom and Mark Giordano are going to Germany to participate in the World Hockey Championships May 7 to 23.

Nystrom and Moss, teammates at the University of Michigan in college, will both play for Team USA  and Giordano will play for Canada.

Teammate Rene Bourque is said to be under consideration for Team Canada, too. However, he said Wednesday he had not been contacted by Hockey Canada. If they called, though, Bourque said he would definitely head overseas.

"Obviously I'd love to go," Bourque said. "I've never played for Canada in anything before so if I get the opportunity, I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Nystrom is excited about the chance to continue to play hockey despite the Flames missing the postseason.

"I'm really excited about representing my country and getting the opportunity to play more hockey," Nystrom told the Calgary Herald. "I wasn't ready for the season to be over."

The Flames season ended after Game 82 as they miss the post-season for the first time since 2004.

Nystrom has played for Team USA at the world junior championships. For Moss and Bourque it would be their first time donning their nation's jerseys. Giordano will get his first taste at the World Championships, although he played for Canada at the Spengler Cup in 2008 when he spent a year playing in Russia.

"I was asked to go so I am pretty excited about that," Giordano said Wednesday. "I'l be heading over there in a couple of weeks. It's a good opportunity for me. It's a big tournament and I'm just looking forward to going there and playing well and helping the team."
