The Flames third jersey is a replica of the 1980's classic
In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Flames in Calgary, the sweater is a throwback to the days of yore, an identical replica of the original and intended as a tip of the hat to the teams that built the foundation for the organization.
The Flames who wore the original versions of the retro jersey endeared themselves to their fans by consistently giving their all, playing hard-nosed, gritty hockey with enviable results. With the stated goal of this season a return to the style of play that brought the Flames success in the past, and expectations of similar success rampant, perhaps it is fitting that this year's team also looks the same as the classic squads of the 1980's.
"All of the fans, they say 'What are you doing? Couldn't you just once think about bringing back that great and that venerable jersey?' Of course we not only thought about it, that's what we're going to do," said Flames President and CEO Ken King.
The retro jerseys, which were modeled by current Flame Craig Conroy and alumnus Jim Peplinski, features a white Flaming C logo with yellow trim on the chest, white collar with yellow trim with the NHL logo right below the neck, as well as two yellow stripes with a white one between them around the bottom of the jersey and on the sleeves. The Flames 30th anniversary patch sits just below the left shoulder.
"I'm going to feel kind of nostalgic when I see that sweater, because that was our first sweater," said Flames co-owner Harley Hotchkiss.
"Sometimes I feel a bit lonely because I'm really the only one remaining of that original ownership group. I get some comfort of course from Jim Peplinski who's been around here for 30 years and can hold my hand whenever I'm feeling sorry for myself."
While fans shouldn't expect to see this year's team complement their throwback sweaters with furry moustaches, or wooden sticks, they will be sporting red helmets and red gloves to complete their uniforms.
The vintage outfits will be worn for five home games this season against Canadian opponents, including the home opener October 1 versus the Canucks, as well as October 6 versus the Canadiens, January 2 versus the Maple Leafs, January 30 versus the Oilers, and March 11 versus the Senators.
The new vintage jerseys will allow fans to relive the glory days, all while looking forward to a bright future with a promising season less than a month away.
"We think it's important to honour our history, and we think it's as important to focus going forward," said King.
"I feel good about our organization, about our team. We're in a highly competitive league as you all know, but I think we've got a well-rounded team and that we'll make a good account of ourselves this year," agreed Hotchkiss.
The vintage jersey is available right now at any FanAttic location for $119.99 plus GST.
In celebration of the Flames 30th Anniversary, the FanAttic are offering to have the official 30th Anniversary patch pressed for free onto any jersey purchased (Home, Away, or Vintage).
