Jarome Iginla - 10 years in the making

By Miranda Baker

Flames' captain Jarome Iginla reached an impressive and all-important milestone Thursday night in Minnesota, recording his 300th NHL career goal and 600th point.

The goal moves him within 14 of Joe Nieuwendyk's record and 64 behind current record holder Theoren Fleury.

"It feels good. It's something you don't really think about along the way, but it was cool to get for sure," beamed Iginla, a day after reaching 300.

But it wasn't that long ago, Iginla was a young and impressionable 19-year-old eager to score his first NHL goal. In fact, it was 10-years ago on Oct. 5 in Vancouver, but Iginla remembers it like it was yesterday.

"I remember number one. It was my first regular season goal; we were playing in Vancouver, and I remember I hadn’t scored all pre-season," said Iginla.

"I had a pretty tough pre-season as a rookie, and I was really pushing for a goal."

According to Iginla, he had a two-on-one with Cory Millen and he drove hard to the net with a backhand.

"If there was ever a tap in that was one, and it felt great," added Iginla.

Fleury currently sits atop the Flames All Time Leaders in goals with 364 and points with 830.

In 26 games this season, Iginla has recorded 30 points (15g, 15a) and 16 penalty minutes. He's tallied five power play goals, two game winning goals and 1 short-handed goal.

Iginla was acquired along with Cory Millen on Dec. 19, 1995 after a trade with Dallas for Joe Nieuwendyk. Prior to his time with the Flames, Iginla played in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers, helping them capture the Memorial Cup Championship twice in three years.

Now Iginla and the Flames have one more feat to accomplish this Saturday. A win at home against Vancouver next game will be their ninth straight home win, tying the team franchise record of home wins. The Flames haven't won nine straight at home since March of 1991.
