Boyd takes a new number
Flame forward to wear No. 16
The 22-year-old Boyd is hanging up No. 41 and taking No. 16 as the Calgary Flames begin the 2008-09 season. The 22-year-old Boyd is, basically, moving up the ladder.
Often when players first join a team after being drafted, they are assigned numbers for development camps and training camps. They are often the higher numbers and they are often traded in once a player officially make the team.
Boyd, now heading into his third season as a pro, has worn No. 41 since arriving in Calgary n 2006-07.
But, after making the team out of training camp this year, he has decided to switch to a more conventional number. Last season Mark Smith wore 16 for the Flames. Others to have worn No. 16 for the Flames include Brett Hull, Craig Berube, Cory Stillman, Guy Chouinard and Shean Donovan.
Boyd and teammate David Moss had a team-high seven points in six pre-season games. Boyd had a goal and six assists and was a plus 6 through the pre-season.
Last season, in 48 games with the Flames, Boyd had seven goals and five assists. The previous season he played in 13 NHL games and collected two goals and two assists.
The Flames play in Vacnouver tonight and return home to host the Canucks in the Flames home-opener on Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
