INSIDE THE GAME

CALGARY 4 SAN JOSE 3 |

| THE BIG SAVE: Ryane Clowe almost notched his second goal of the night late in the second period, picking up an errant pass by Dion Phaneuf right in front of the Flames net. His shot was dead on and Joseph knocked it to the side boards with his shoulder. Clowe got a goal in first period from almost the exact same spot. |
| THE BIG HIT: Cory Sarich absolutely leveled Sharks captain Patrick Marleau half way through the first period. Marleau was taking the puck up the boards and Sarich came flying in with a hit that left the captain on the ice with an instant black eye. Matthew Carle wasn't happy with the clean hit and tried to deal a few blows to Sarich. He got a roughing call for it and the Flames scored their first goal on the ensuing power play. | |||
| THE TURNING POINT: The Flames took a too many men minor at 3:55, giving the Sharks a great opportunity to get the lead. In one sequence, Ryan Clowe looked like he had his second of the night when he put the puck in the right corner. Joseph was on the other side of the net and managed to get over just in time to take the puck in the shoulder. If the Sharks had scored on the power play, it would have taken a lot of momentum out of the Flames. | |||
QUOTABLE: “I clearly thought it (Sarich hit on Marleau) was an elbow right in the face, came out of it with a bloody nose. I mean you got a cut over the eye and I always thought if you came out of those situations with an injury, a clear injury, you’re bleeding, that there should be something. I was glad of the response of Matt Carle, he jumped right in there. I was kind of surprised that we ended up on the short end of the stick and it ended up being a bit of a change of momentum because they weren’t at all in the game and the fact that they got the power play and we didn’t do a very good job of killing it.” - Ron Wilson, head coach of the San Jose Sharks |

THE ROSTER: The Flames scratches were D Rhett Warrener (ankle), D Anders Eriksson, D John Negrin, F Dustin Boyd, F David Moss and F Mark Smith (head). |
WORTH NOTING: The Flames recalled defenseman John Negrin from the Kootenay Ice after their season ended in the second round of the WHL playoffs. He has 42 assists this season, placing him 2nd on his team and 3rd in the WHL amongst all defensemen ... Marcus Nilson was inserted back into the lineup, taking David Moss's place. |
| BY THE NUMBERS: San Jose had three goals in 3:33. Curtis Joseph replaced Miikka Kiprusoff after the third goal ... Owen Nolan had a three point night. He scored the game winner and had two assists ... Jarome Iginla scored his first post-season goal in the first period. He assisted on Daymond Langkow's second period goal as well ... Dion Phaneuf continued to be a work horse for the Flames. He led all players in ice time with 25:24 ... this is the first time the Sharks have given up a three goal lead all season. | |||
| UP NEXT: The Flames are back at the Pengrowth Saddledome for game four, broadcast on CBC at 8:00 p.m. MST. |
