Flames assistant to become head coach of Omsk

Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that the organization has accepted the resignation of assistant coach Wayne Fleming.
Fleming will assume the head coach position with Omsk of the Russian Continental Hockey League.
“We have great respect for the work Wayne did with us and appreciate his contributions,” said Sutter. “We understand that the opportunity to be the head coach of a significant team such as this represents the very best opportunity for him and his career at this time.”
“I’m proud of my two seasons working as a member of the Flames coaching staff alongside very professional and successful hockey people,” said Fleming. “There is no question regarding the commitment of the Flames organization to winning the Stanley Cup.”
Fleming originally joined the Flames coaching staff on July 12, 2006 after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers.
He was associate coach for Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. He served as the Vice President of Hockey and Head Coach for the National Men’s Team for the Canadian Hockey Association.
In his role, he served as head coach of the Canadian National Men’s Team at the 2001 and the 2002 IIHF World Championships. Fleming also served as an associate coach for Canada’s Men’s Olympic Hockey Team which captured the gold medal at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In addition to his international coaching experience, the 58 year-old Fleming served as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes during the 1999-00 season and with the New York Islanders for two seasons (1997-98 and 1998-99).
Prior to joining the Islanders, he coached Kloten in the Swiss Elite League and Landshut of the German League during the 1996-97 season. Prior to this Fleming spent four seasons coaching Leksand in the Swedish Elite League (1992-93 through 1995-95).
A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Fleming served as an assistant coach and General Manager of the Canadian National Olympic Program for two years (1990 to 1992) and was a member of the coaching staff that led the Canadian National Men’s Team to a silver medal at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France.
