Read ended the game in the fifth round with a shot that beat Miikka Kiprusoff just inside the goal post.
Jakub Voracek, Braydon Coburn and Nicklas Grossman also scored in regulation for Philadelphia (34-20-7), which vaulted over New Jersey into fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
Mark Giordano, Matt Stajan, Tom Kostopoulos and Alex Tanguay had goals for Calgary (28-23-11), which got 41 saves from Kiprusoff through overtime. The Flames scored at even strength, on a power play, short-handed, and with a penalty shot.
The Flames dropped to 11th in the Western Conference, one point behind Dallas, Los Angeles and Colorado at the postseason cutoff.
Philadelphia tied it 3-3 at 7:35 of the third period. Stajan was sent off for boarding 27 seconds into a penalty for too many men on the ice, and the Flyers needed just 40 seconds of the 5-on-3 power play to capitalize. Kimmo Timonen's point shot was tipped past Kiprusoff by Hartnell for his team-leading 29th goal.
Calgary went ahead 4-3 at 10:49 on a penalty-shot goal by Tanguay. After being slashed from behind by Pavel Kubina on a breakaway, Tanguay scored on the penalty shot when he faked a shot to get goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to drop to the ice. He then went wide and scored in his ninth goal of the season.
That lead lasted less than two minutes. Grossman scored his first goal of the season on a long shot, while Hartnell screened Kiprusoff, to make it 4-4 at 12:21.
Calgary led 2-0 after the first period and pushed its lead to three goals 12:55 into the second. With the Flames short-handed, Tanguay stole the puck along the side boards in the Flyers' end and slipped a pass to Kostopoulos, who was breaking to the net. He chipped a shot over Bryzgalov's glove for his first goal in 33 games.
The Flyers roared back, outshooting the Flames 12-2 over the final seven minutes of the second, scoring twice to cut the deficit to one goal.
At 15:47, Voracek outmuscled Derek Smith for the puck along the boards and drove to the net. He wristed a 15-footer past Kiprusoff high on the blocker side.
The Flyers scored again in the final minute of the period. Coburn's long shot was stopped by Kiprusoff, but on the rebound the puck hit Flames defenseman Scott Hannan in the leg and slipped inside the post.
Calgary opened the scoring on an unassisted power-play goal by Giordano at 3:45 of the first period.
Giordano reached high over his head to glove down a clearing attempt by Voracek at the blue line. The Flames defenseman set the puck down and, with it still wobbling, stepped into a slap shot that beat Bryzgalov high on the glove side.
Calgary went ahead 2-0 at 5:17 when Stajan cut across the slot and beat Bryzgalov with a harmless looking shot.
Two goals on two shots against Bryzgalov prompted coach Peter Laviolette to call his timeout. Every save for Bryzgalov brought out jeers from the crowd for the rest of the first. He finished the game with 17 saves.
