EDMONTON, AB --
Lee Stempniak scored his second career hat trick in the Flames 6-2 thumping of the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night.
Mikael Backlund potted his second goal in 21 games to at 6:48. The goal was set up by defenceman
Mark Giordano, who faked a shot before sending the pivot the puck. Backlund had a wide open net to deposit the puck into.
Calgary's second goal of the night was courtesy of
Blake Comeau. He sent a hard shot from the faceoff circle that just slipped past Khabibulin's glove.
Scott Hannan earned the lone helper on the play.
The Flames finished off the first period with a goal from Stempniak.
Jay Bouwmeester leapt up into the play, drawing attention to himself, leaving Stempniak all alone to rifle a shot top shelf.
Stempniak added his 11th goal of the campaign at 19:24 of the second period with a soft shot that eluded Khabibulin and ended his night. The Oilers opted to go with Devan Dubnyk in the third period.
Edmonton finally got themselves on the board in the third period when Andy Sutton hammered a hard shot past Kiprusoff.
The Oilers gained some momentum from the goal but it was promptly killed by a Darcy Hordichuk penalty that resulted in a power play marker for the Flames.
With the rough and tumble forward sitting in the box, Bouwmeester notched his third of the season after redirecting a hard shot from
Jarome Iginla.
Olli Jokinen picked up the secondary assist.
Ryan Smyth potted the Oilers second goal of the night but Stempniak completed the hat trick when he threw in an empty netter at 17:55, killing any hope of a comeback from the hometown team.
