Jay Feaster expressed a need to add size to the Flames’ roster on numerous occasions leading up to the 2013 draft. Therefore, it made perfect sense to hear Keegan Kanzig’s name announced by the Flames as the 67th overall pick in the third round. Kanzig instantly shifted the Flames average height/weight bracket up.

Out of his skates, this Victoria Royals defender stands just shy of six foot six and fills that frame with 240 pounds. A prospect as physically developed as Kanzig, by age 18, is an anomaly. What makes Kanzig a layered asset is that, of course, he can push opponents out of the slot, but he also has the patience and maturity to make the right play breaking the puck up ice.

In his 2012-13 season, Kanzig played 70 of 72 games for Victoria and landed fourth in WHL penalty minutes, with 159. The Royals finished third in the BC Division while Kanzig notched 7 assists and secured a -10 in plus/minus. Kanzig also wracked up experience at the blue line playing for Canada Pacific in the 2012 U17 World Hockey Challenge.

Kanzig will, without a doubt, turn heads (upward) with his stature, but what he has to offer the Flames organization is leaps and bound above six-foot-six.
