There’s no question Emile Poirier has speed. However, what makes him standout is his ability to switch up pacing. This is one of the most difficult attacks for defenders to channel and cover. Another gem Poirier possesses is that, at all speeds, the puck remains securely on his stick.

Poirier was a rare draft pick by the Flames, at 22nd overall in the first round, as he derives from the QMJHL and only one other player has been drafted from the Q in Flames’ history (Denis Gauthier in ’95).

Poirier’s impressive skating combined with his draft-year season, with the Gatineau Olympiques, were a lock to earn a spot with the Flames Organization. In 2012/13, he was the leading scorer for Gatineau with 32 goals and 38 assists in 65 games. Not to mention an even plus/minus and a stacked 101 penalty minutes. Once more, Poirier, along with fellow prospect Sean Monahan, was among the 35 players selected to attend Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team summer development camp, running Aug. 4-10 in Brossard, QC and Lake Placid, NY.
