John Gilmour's decision to head to Providence College in the 2012-13 season was likely one of the best-timed decisions he has ever made. Calgary Flames prospects Mark Jankowski and Jon Gillies were also entering their freshman season that year and the team made a few trips out east to see how the pair were faring.
It also allowed them to see the then-draft eligible Gilmour in action.
Passed over in the 2011 and 2012 NHL Drafts, Gilmour's game had flourished under Providence head coach Nate Leaman's watch. The rearguard, who has quite a bit of offensive upside to his game, scored 3 goals and registered 13 points in 38 games in the 2012-13 campaign and rounded out his play in his own zone. He possesses a very hard, accurate shot from the point and was used quite a bit on the Friars first power play unit.
Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing in at 173-pounds, Gilmour isn't going to wow anyone with his size but he makes up for his stature with excellent skating, a high hockey IQ and an incredible work ethic.
