It’s hard to miss Jon Gillies when he steps out on to the ice. At 6-foot-5, the netminder often towers over the opposition and that gives him the immediate advantage over shooters as he can see through traffic extremely well.
Gillies is an athletic goaltender who moves very well for a player of his stature. He is quite aggressive when challenging shooters and has good positioning in the crease. He also has a quick glove hand and covers the top corners of the net commendably.
In the 2011-12 campaign, Gillies led the USHL in wins (31), minutes played and shots faced in the regular season. He also carried the Indiana Ice to the Eastern Conference Finals, posting a 2.84 GAA and .911 save percentage in the postseason.
He continued his strong play in his freshman year at Providence College, becoming the backbone of a young Friars squad. The South Portland, ME product was in net for all 17 of Providence's victories, was second in all of Hockey East with a 2.08 GAA and a .931 save percentage, and posted 5 shutouts over the course of the season. Among his numerous awards last year, Gillies was named Hockey East's Rookie of the Year, the HCA National Division I Rookie of the Year, and the College Hockey News Rookie of the Year.
