CALGARY, AB -- On Monday, the Calgary Flames added one more name to their contingent going over to Belarus for the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
New general manager Brad Treliving is part of the management group for Hockey Canada, helping construct the roster alongside general manager Rob Blake, assistant general manager Brad Pascall, and assistant general manager Ron Hextall.
Treliving is understandably swamped with getting to know his new team and preparing for the upcoming NHL Draft but he will be making the nearly 15-hour flight to Minsk to observe the team he helped create compete on the world stage.
"They've been great. It's somewhat flexible," Treliving said of his commitment to Hockey Canada. "We've made a commitment to go over. Now, for how long? Our first responsibility is with our teams.
"We did a lot of work in terms of putting that team together. The commitment to go over, I think it's the right thing to go over and spend as much time as we can. I don't know what that time commitment is yet."
Making the trip to Belarus will also be a dual-purpose trip in a way, allowing Treliving to take him a few of his newest charges in action.
Johnny Gaudreau has been added to the USA's roster, Mikael Backlund will represent Sweden, Jiri Hudler will dress for the Czech Republic, but Treliving will have the most access to one player in particular.
Flames rookie Sean Monahan has been named to Canada's roster, giving the new general manager a larger platform to evaluate a player he already thinks highly of.
"I loved Sean Monahan going into the draft. [were doing everything we could to get into a position to look at a guy like that. I'd be lying to you to say that I thought he'd come in and have the type of season he did in his rookie year."
Canada opens the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship against France on Friday, May 9. They will also face the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Slovakia and Sweden in the preliminary round.
