1ST PERIOD RECAP: 0-0
After an even-keeled first couple of minutes, the Flames picked up their play and began to take advantage of the Oilers lax defensive coverage. One of the Flames best scoring opportunities came when Alex Tanguay went in on a partial break, shot high glove side and beat Nikolai Khabibulan but not the iron.
Late in the first period, the Flames were awarded the first power play of the game but couldn't capitalize despite numerous chances. As the penalty (bench minor - too many men) expired, the Flames were given a penalty shot when one of the players shoved a broken stick at Tim Jackman. Tanguay took the shot but was stopped by Khabibulan.
