Draft Diary: Day 1
Thursday, 23.06.2011 / 9:29 AM
Goodbye Calgary, hello Minnesota! (An Alex Ruiz photo)
If you're involved in hockey and living in Calgary, there's a good chance you were on a Delta flight to Minnesota on Tuesday. As soon as we walked into the airport, we were surrounded by hockey coaches, players, scouts and media. While passing through security, the attendant's first question actually was "You headed to the draft too?" before waving me on after I gave a nod.
Sitting directly across from us on the flight was Flames assistant coach Dave Lowry and prospect Ty Rattie. After some good-natured ribbing about Lowry's performance at Play On! street hockey tournament, we cajoled him into pulling down all of bags from overhead despite his protests.
After walking through swarm after swarm of prospects in the Minneapolis airport (let it be known the stereotype that all 17 & 18 year old males feel the need to slather themselves in Ax body-spray appears to be true), it was off to St. Paul to survey our home for the next four days.
Next up is a day filled with meetings, prospect clinics and tours and all sorts of media opportunities. Jay Feaster, Tod Button and the rest of scouts will spend the next two days scrutinizing prospects before heading to the first round tomorrow night. Watch CalgaryFlames.com for interviews, photo galleries and more!
